Understanding the Hidden Challenge—and Unlocking Hidden Potential

Introduction
Every junior golfer learns differently.
Some players can hear a coach explain a swing change once and immediately perform it. Others need to see it. Some need to feel it. And some may understand exactly what to do—but struggle to process the information quickly enough to execute it.
For approximately 10–20% of the population, that difference may be related to developmental dyslexia. Dyslexia is commonly thought of as simply a reading disorder, but decades of research now show it affects far more than reading. It can influence working memory, processing speed, sequencing, executive function, attention, motor coordination, and the ability to rapidly retrieve information—all skills that are important in golf.
Interestingly, there has been very little research specifically examining dyslexia in golf. However, there is now a substantial body of research connecting dyslexia with motor learning, movement coordination, executive functioning, visual attention, and athletic performance. These findings provide valuable insight into how junior golfers can be coached more effectively.
The encouraging news?
Dyslexia is not a barrier to becoming an outstanding golfer.
In fact, many dyslexic individuals possess strengths that may actually become competitive advantages when coached correctly.
What Is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a neurodevelopmental difference that primarily affects language processing.
It is not caused by:
• Low intelligence
• Poor effort
• Lack of motivation
• Vision problems
Instead, the dyslexic brain processes information differently.
Many dyslexic children demonstrate:
• Strong creativity
• Excellent problem solving
• Big-picture thinking
• Spatial reasoning
• Innovation
• Resilience
Research suggests that many successful entrepreneurs, engineers, architects, designers, military leaders, and elite athletes are dyslexic. Their brains often excel at seeing patterns and solving complex problems from unique perspectives.
Does Dyslexia Affect Golf Development?
The short answer:
Yes—but not necessarily in the way most people think.
The golf swing itself isn't affected because someone cannot read.
Rather, dyslexia can influence many of the learning systems involved in acquiring golf skills.
Research has found differences in several areas.
1. Working Memory
Working memory is your brain's "mental whiteboard."
2. Processing Speed
Research has demonstrated slower processing on certain decision-making and choice reaction tasks in children with dyslexia, even when simple reaction speed is normal.
Golf demands rapid processing when deciding certain things, especially risk versus reward.
3. Executive Function
Executive function controls:
• Planning
• Organization
• Self-monitoring
• Flexibility
• Decision making
Modern sport science consistently shows executive functioning is strongly related to athletic performance.
Golf may be the ultimate executive-function sport.
Players constantly evaluate: • Strategy • Distance • Hazards • Emotional state • Risk
4. Motor Coordination
Perhaps the most surprising finding in recent research is the connection between dyslexia and motor development.
A large 2024 meta-analysis reviewing 23 studies concluded that children and adolescents with dyslexia often perform differently across multiple motor tasks compared with peers.
Earlier population studies also found higher rates of motor coordination difficulties among children with severe dyslexia.
This does not mean every dyslexic golfer has coordination problems. Many do not. But coaches should be aware that some may need more repetitions or different teaching methods.
5. Sequencing
Golf is built on sequences. Many dyslexic learners struggle with ordered sequences. This can influence things like pre-shot routines and tournament preparation.
6. Visual Attention
Elite golfers excel at controlling visual attention—knowing what to focus on and when. Executive function and visual attention are closely linked to sport performance.
Some dyslexic individuals may experience visual-attentional differences, making it harder to filter distractions or maintain focus during complex tasks.
Mental Performance Considerations
Many dyslexic children experience years of being told they are: careless / distracted / slow / not trying
Those experiences can create: anxiety / perfectionism / fear of failure / low confidence
Golf's constant evaluation can magnify those feelings.
Coaches should praise: / effort / persistence / learning / resilience
rather than only outcomes.
Strengths Dyslexic Golfers May Bring
Many dyslexic athletes develop exceptional:
• Creativity
• Adaptability
• Visualization
• Pattern recognition
• Resilience
• Problem solving
• Strategic thinking
• Emotional toughness
Those strengths can become tremendous assets in golf when coaching builds on them rather than focusing only on deficits.
Final Thoughts
There is currently no published research specifically examining dyslexia and golf performance, so we should avoid claiming that dyslexia directly causes lower golf scores or slower player development. However, a growing body of evidence shows that dyslexia can influence motor learning, working memory, executive function, processing speed, and visual attention—abilities that are all important in learning and performing golf skills.
For coaches, the key lesson is not to lower expectations, but to adapt instruction. Junior golfers with dyslexia often thrive when teaching is more visual, more structured, less verbally demanding, and paced to allow for processing and repetition. With patient coaching, many develop exceptional resilience, creativity, and problem-solving skills that become strengths on the golf course.
At the Junior Golf Development Lab, our goal is not to ask, "What's wrong with this player?" Instead, we should ask, "How does this player learn best?"
When coaches understand the science behind learning differences, they don't just create better golfers—they create environments where every junior has the opportunity to reach his or her potential.
